Bioo has finalized the Brazilian market’s first sales contract for CGOBs to a European client, validating the international potential of Brazilian biomethane as a decarbonization asset.
Brazil’s energy transition has just reached an important milestone with a strategic move by Bioo.
The company, which operates a biomethane plant in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, announced this Tuesday (10/20) the signing of its first sales contract for Biomethane Guarantee of Origin Certificates (CGOBs) to a major player in Europe.
This milestone represents the first time that the traceability instrument, regulated by the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) in early 2026, is used to meet the demand of a foreign company.
The delivery of the certificates is scheduled for the end of this year, pending only operational procedures for final certificate issuance.
The value of the environmental attribute
The transaction highlights a growing trend in the global market: the rising value placed on Brazilian decarbonization.
By unbundling the environmental attribute from the physical gas molecule, the sector opens doors to a more agile and efficient commercialization model.
Maurício Cótica, founder of Bioo, stated:
“The full operationalization of the instrument will be another important driver for enabling new biomethane projects in the country”
Bioo, which has strategic backing from partners such as Flying Rivers, Sebigas Cótica, and BNDES Participações (BNDESPAR), reinforces through this sale that Brazilian biomethane is a competitive asset, even if physical consumption of the molecule occurs domestically while the environmental benefit is accounted for globally via a book-and-claim model.
Regulatory impact and decarbonization targets
CGOBs are part of the framework of the Fuel of the Future program, which sets targets for fossil gas producers and importers to reduce their emissions.
For 2024, the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) set a 0.5% target, which corresponds to a significant volume of 181.7 million cubic meters of biomethane annually.
For the market to achieve scale, the sector awaits full activation of ANP‘s backing system, which will link sales invoices to the certification audit flow.
As this digital infrastructure consolidates, the expectation is that new environmental attribute sales contracts will emerge, positioning Brazil as a key supplier of low-carbon solutions for investors and industries worldwide.
