Diesel hits R$ 7.20, raising alarms in the transportation sector in October.

The October scenario brought a renewed upward wave to fuel prices across the country, directly impacting logistical costs and, consequently, consumers’ pockets. Diesel, in particular, registered a significant jump, with regular diesel reaching an average of R$ 7.20 per liter, according to the Edenred Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL).

This upward surge of 6.67% for regular diesel and 5.07% for S-10 diesel pushed prices to R$ 7.46 per liter. Ethanol also felt the pressure, with a 2.38% increase, reaching R$ 4.31 per liter. Gasoline, meanwhile, showed remarkable resilience with a minimal variation of 0.15%, holding steady at around R$ 6.73 per liter.

Causes of the Price Surge

The pressure on fuel prices is multifaceted, combining both internal and external factors. Heavy reliance on imports to meet national demand for Diesel A—which reached 23.14% of sales—is a key pillar of this instability.

To mitigate the effects of this dependence and attempt to contain rising prices, the Ministry of Finance expanded subsidies for importers, raising the benefit to R$ 3.52 per liter. This measure aims to ease the transfer of growing costs throughout the production chain.

Regional Disparity and Ethanol’s Advantage

Price variations were not uniform across the country. While the South region posted the largest increases in diesel prices, the North region stood out with the highest average prices across all fuel types. This regional disparity reflects differing dynamics of supply, demand, and logistical costs.

Conversely, ethanol established itself as a financially more attractive alternative in 19 Brazilian states and the Federal District compared to gasoline. This competitive advantage of the biofuel may influence consumer choices in a volatile pricing environment.

Impacts on the Logistics Chain and Future Outlook

The volatility of the international oil market and rising maritime freight costs continue to pose challenges to Brazil’s logistics chain. These factors, combined with domestic dynamics, pressure transportation costs and have a direct impact on the population’s cost of living. Managing this complex pricing equation will be crucial for economic stability in the coming months.
