Santa Catarina will allocate R$ 5 million to create a Bioenergy Atlas, mapping waste to drive the energy transition and attract sector investment.

The state of Santa Catarina is poised to take a decisive step toward sustainability and innovation in the clean energy sector. With a financial contribution of R$ 5 million, secured through a FAPESC call for proposals, the state will develop an unprecedented Bioenergy Atlas.

The primary objective of this initiative is to catalog and analyze byproducts generated by local productive activities, turning what was once considered waste into valuable power generation opportunities. The project reinforces the region’s commitment to decarbonization and the strengthening of the circular economy.

A task force between science and industry

To put the plan into action, execution will be led by SENAI/SC, which will oversee an extensive cooperation network involving 37 scholarship holders and researchers from renowned institutions. The project includes participation from UFSC, UDESC, FURB, Univille, Unochapecó, and Embrapa Suínos e Aves.

This synergy between academia and industry will ensure a rigorous technical analysis of the availability and feasibility of these materials. The core idea is to consolidate currently scattered data into a unified platform that is accessible to the market.

Charles Leber, coordinator of the Decarbonization Hub at FIESC, notes:

This work demonstrates how the coordination between industry, research institutions, and funding mechanisms can turn a demand into a concrete initiative. The Atlas emerged from discussions held at the Decarbonization Hub and brings together the expertise of SENAI/SC and partner institutions to generate information that supports new projects and opportunities in bioenergy.

New horizons for green investment

The strategic tool will serve not only academic purposes but will function as a practical guide for the business sector and public authorities. By detailing where resources are located and identifying the most suitable technologies, the survey will facilitate more informed decision-making.

With optimistic projections for the renewable energy ecosystem, the state aims to attract new financial investments, consolidating regional hubs focused on the energy recovery of biomass and organic waste.
