Power distribution companies face a tight deadline to declare demand in crucial auctions for 2026, setting supply contracts starting in 2027.

The clean and renewable energy sector is gearing up as the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) opens the deadline for power distributors to submit their energy procurement needs. The measure is a key step toward holding existing energy auctions, designated as A-1, A-2, and A-3, scheduled for November 2026. Defining these volumes will directly impact energy supply starting in 2027.

Electric power utilities have until the end of October to log their demand projections in the Regulated Contracting Environment (ACR). This declaration, to be made through the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) platform, is essential for accurately establishing the amounts of energy to be traded in future auctions. The resulting contracts, known as CCEARs, will form the backbone of regulated supply for subsequent years.

Defining Demands and Deadlines

The demand declaration by distributors is a formal process aimed at ratifying or adjusting consumption projections. The data submitted to CCEE will directly support the definition of volumes to be contracted, ensuring that the needs of the regulated market are met. Regulated by MME Normative Ordinance No. 135/2026, this procedure is a prerequisite for the auctions scheduled for November 13, 2026.

The information must be submitted exclusively by users with specific permission on the CCEE platform. The strict nature of the regulation prevents submitting caveats or using alternative channels for the declaration. Data confidentiality will be maintained until the official conclusion of the public trading sessions, ensuring the integrity of the auction process.

Auctions Focused on Existing Energy

The A-1, A-2, and A-3 auctions primarily focus on contracting power from facilities already operating in the National Interconnected System (SIN). Projects from various generation sources are eligible to participate, provided they meet technical and legal requirements. The purpose of these auctions is to optimize the use of existing assets, promoting energy supply security.

Contracts awarded in these auctions will have a uniform duration of two years and will be negotiated on a quantity basis. An important feature is the absence of inflation adjustment clauses during the contract term. Supply start dates vary by auction: January 1, 2027, for A-1; January 1, 2028, for A-2; and January 1, 2029, for A-3.

Contracting energy in advance is vital to ensuring a stable power supply for millions of Brazilian consumers. The distributors’ role at this stage is crucial to mapping future needs and ensuring the country’s generation fleet aligns with regulated demand, reinforcing the commitment to energy security and supply continuity.
