Petrobras led the 6th Permanent Offer Cycle of the ANP, securing 12 blocks in the Campos Basin and accounting for the vast majority of total revenue.

Petrobras has solidified its strategic position in Brazil’s energy sector by investing nearly R$ 3 billion in the acquisition of new exploration assets in the long-standing Campos Basin. The move took place during the 6th Cycle of the OPC (Permanent Offer of Concession), hosted by the ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) in Rio de Janeiro.

The state-owned company was the standout participant in the auction held this Wednesday, accounting for over 97% of the total revenue generated by the federal government through signature bonuses. In total, the auction featured hundreds of areas, drawing interest from various companies for both onshore and offshore basins across the country.

Petrobras’ expansion in the Campos Basin

Out of the 308 exploration blocks offered by the ANP, 49 were acquired by a group of nine winning companies. Petrobras focused its efforts on the Campos Basin, where it already has an operational history, acquiring 12 blocks spread across different sectors for a total exceeding R$ 2.9 billion.

Economic projections indicate that the initial exploration phase in these new areas will require substantial financial commitments. For the Rio de Janeiro region alone, the projected investments exceed R$ 1 billion, reinforcing the long-term productivity of the Southeast coast.

The strong participation of Petrobras and other oil companies demonstrates the ongoing attractiveness of Brazilian basins, balancing the replenishment of reserves with the regional development of the energy industry.

Results in other basins and next steps

Beyond its dominance in the Southeast region, the national oil company also made its mark on the Equatorial Margin, forming a consortium with QatarEnergy to secure seven blocks in the Ceará Basin. Other companies, such as Eneva, Origem Energia, and PetroRecôncavo, also secured assets in traditional onshore basins, such as Recôncavo and Parnaíba.

With the auction concluded and contracts to be signed, the winning companies will begin their environmental licensing and seismic research schedules. Advancing these exploration fronts will be critical to replenishing national hydrocarbon reserves and supporting the energy matrix for the coming decades.
