The energy transition in Europe is gaining unprecedented momentum, with projections pointing to a significant leap in storage capacity by 2026.

The clean energy sector in Europe is gearing up for extraordinary growth over the coming years. According to the latest survey by EUPD Research, the battery energy storage market is expected to reach 57 GWh of installed capacity by 2026, representing a substantial 78% surge compared to the 32 GWh projected for 2025.

This turnaround reflects a profound transformation in the continent’s electrical infrastructure. Batteries are shifting from acting merely as secondary support for solar energy to playing a central role in the stability and flexibility of renewable energy grids.

Growth Hubs and Regional Highlights

This advancement is primarily driven by five nations: Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Spain. While the German and Italian markets rely on established installer networks, the British and Spanish territories are accelerating their pace with large-scale infrastructure projects connected directly to the transmission grid.

The inclusion of Bulgaria at the top of the list demonstrates the impact of financial contributions from the European Union in Central Europe and the continent’s Southeastern region. Falling equipment costs, combined with high electricity tariffs, are encouraging households and businesses to seek greater energy autonomy.

The Rise of the Residential and Commercial Sector

Households continue to lead demand, with forecasts pointing to a jump from 11 GWh to 15 GWh. Germany leads this segment, followed by Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Austria. In the commercial and industrial sector, the priority is cutting operating expenses.

Batteries are no longer viewed simply as a complement to solar generation; they are becoming essential infrastructure to enhance the integration of renewable sources, provide grid flexibility, and keep pace with advancing electrification across different consumer segments.

Fierce Competition Among Manufacturers

Competition among equipment brands is also undergoing transformations. Industry giants such as BYD, Huawei, Sungrow, and Fox ESS are vying for consumer preference, alongside the emergence of new players like Sigenergy. The pursuit of integrated ecosystems and smart energy management is setting the market pace.

With regulatory evolution and the maturation of electrical grids, the continent is consolidating a highly competitive landscape. The topic will remain in the spotlight at major industry forums, such as the European Sustainability Week 2026, where global leaders will debate the future of sustainability and the energy transition.
