The political landscape in Brazil’s strategic energy states is solidifying after the first round of elections, confirming administrations focused on infrastructure and transition projects.

Recent Brazilian elections have brought a scenario of continuity to most states leading energy and natural resource production in the country. While national attention is focused on the presidential race, the composition of state governments in vital regions for the electricity and oil & gas sectors is now practically settled, signaling stability for investors and new projects.

The early definition of executive heads in strategic hubs is a decisive factor for the sector’s development agenda. With the continuation of administrations in key states, the expectation is that public policies aimed at expanding renewables and exploring new energy frontiers will follow a predictable and consistent timeline.

The Oil & Gas Outlook

In the hydrocarbon sector, the re-election of Tarcísio de Freitas in São Paulo and Fábio Mitidieri in Sergipe reinforces the continuity of large-scale projects. Sergipe, in particular, remains on the market’s radar due to the advanced stage of the Sergipe Deepwater project.

However, the situation in Rio de Janeiro still carries uncertainties. As the largest oil and gas producer, the state awaits a judicial decision from the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) regarding the electoral dispute. The outcome of this legal pending issue is closely monitored by the sector, given the state’s weight in the regulation and operation of the oil and gas chain.

Political stability in states leading the energy matrix is the fundamental pillar to ensure that planned investments in infrastructure and new generation plants do not suffer discontinuities across government cycles.

Renewable Energy and the Future of Transition

In the strongholds of solar and wind energy, the continuity of regional administrations has brought predictability. In Bahia, Piauí, and Ceará, the re-elections of Jerônimo Rodrigues, Rafael Fonteles, and Elmano de Freitas, respectively, ensure that the pace of expansion in the renewable sector in the Northeast remains focused on consolidating existing parks.

In Minas Gerais, the election of Cleitinho Azevedo brings a new perspective to the state that leads in solar photovoltaic power. The administration will face the continuous challenge of mitigating generation cuts, known as curtailment, which have been a major technical bottleneck for operators in the region.

The unfolding of these election results not only seals local governability but also sets the tone for energy governance over the next four years. The ability of newly elected and re-elected administrators to engage with the private sector will be crucial for the success of decarbonization projects and for the balance of the national power grid.
