CCEE highlights energy storage as a strategic pillar for the flexibility and security of Brazil’s power system, paving the way for upcoming auctions.

The structuring of the energy storage market in Brazil took center stage during the ABSOLAR Storage Leaders event.

During her presentation, Gerusa Côrtes, Market Operations Director at CCEE, emphasized that the advancement of renewable sources and the expansion of the free contracting environment require new solutions to ensure the stability of the national electricity sector.

The most relevant point of the discussion centered on the urgent need to define clear services and remuneration rules.

According to the executive, the integration of batteries is not merely a technological trend, but an indispensable tool to provide greater grid resilience in the face of natural fluctuations from solar and wind power sources.

The Strategic Role of Batteries in the Grid

During the panel on the architecture of the Capacity Reserve Auction, scheduled for December, CCEE reinforced that operational flexibility has become a core challenge.

The popularization of distributed generation and self-production models demand technologies capable of managing load peaks and supplying demand at critical moments.

Gerusa Côrtes stated:

Storage comes in as a strategic tool because all these changes, which were heavily driven by the use of technology, have brought operational challenges.

In addition to energy security, the implementation of these systems promises significant economic gains by optimizing the use of existing resources and reducing operational costs for the entire power sector supply chain.

Preparation and Capacity Building for Auctions

CCEE has already intensified its actions to ensure excellence in the bidding rounds scheduled for December 2 and 4.

The focus lies not only on regulatory and technical adaptation, but also on qualifying market participants.

The entity plans to hold a series of specialized workshops and training sessions to ensure that participants fully understand the rules and specifics of storage contracts.

The director explained:

Preparation doesn’t just begin when the Ordinance is published. It starts much earlier because, beyond adapting systems and rules, we also care about training and capacity building for agents.

Outlook for the Future of the Sector

The event also featured industry leaders such as Barbara Rubim, Chair of the Board of ABSOLAR, and Rodrigo Sauaia, CEO of the association, reinforcing the consensus that Brazil’s energy transition depends on a well-designed market architecture.

The dialogue between bodies such as EPE and industry experts aims to align strategic planning with the needs of an increasingly decentralized system.

The successful integration of energy storage will be the differentiating factor for grid sustainability in the coming years.

With the clear definition of services and the secure execution of auctions, Brazil positions itself at the forefront of electrical modernization, paving the way for a power matrix that is increasingly efficient, flexible, and prepared for future challenges.
