After a five-month period of increased tariffs, Brazilian consumers can celebrate some positive news: the electricity bill for October 2026 will be the first to arrive without the additional costs imposed by the tariff flag system. The decision was announced by Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) this Friday (Sept. 25, 2026), which set the Green Flag for the upcoming month.
The Green Flag designation indicates that energy generation conditions in the country are favorable. This directly benefits citizens’ wallets, as there will be no additional costs added to the electricity tariff. This is a significant change that impacts millions of households and businesses, providing a break in monthly expenses related to power consumption.
Throughout 2026, the scenario for energy tariffs fluctuated. During the first four months, from January to April, the Green Flag was in effect. However, starting in May, Aneel had to trigger the Yellow Flag due to a decrease in rainfall, a crucial factor in the transition from the wet to the dry season. This shift imposed an additional cost of R$ 1.885 for every 100 kWh consumed, remaining in place until the end of September.
The switch to the Green Flag in October is a direct reflection of improved hydrological conditions across the country. Aneel highlighted that increased rainfall in the South and Southeast regions was the determining factor. This water inflow contributed significantly to raising and stabilizing the water levels in the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants, ensuring greater energy security.

- Green Flag: Signals very favorable conditions for energy generation. At this level, there is no additional charge on the electricity bill.
- Yellow Flag: Indicates that energy generation conditions are slightly less favorable. This incurs an additional charge of R$ 1.885 for every 100 kWh consumed.
- Red Flag, Level 1: This level reflects more costly energy generation conditions. The extra charge on the invoice is R$ 4.463 for every 100 kWh consumed.
- Red Flag, Level 2: Represents the most challenging and expensive scenario for energy generation. It is the level with the highest increase, totaling R$ 7.877 for every 100 kWh consumed.
