Grupo Equatorial is leading innovation in Brazil’s electricity sector by implementing nanotechnology to track copper cables. This initiative aims to combat asset theft and ensure the continuity of energy supply nationwide.
The theft of copper wiring has become a critical challenge for urban infrastructure and the continuity of essential services in Brazil. Beyond financial losses, the illegal removal of components directly compromises the quality of public lighting and the supply of electricity, affecting millions of consumers and network safety.
In light of this scenario, modernizing networks through technological innovation emerges as a fundamental pillar. The use of advanced solutions focused on traceability and monitoring allows companies in the sector to strengthen their asset security, optimize investigations, and integrate strategic actions with public security forces to curb organized crime.
Pioneering Innovation in the Energy Sector
Grupo Equatorial has established itself as the first distributor in the country to adopt a nanotechnology solution specifically aimed at protecting its assets. The project, initially tested in March 2025, officially went into operation in January 2026, with an initial focus on the Rio Grande do Sul concession.

It is a solution that combines technology, intelligence, and security to protect our assets and, consequently, the continuity of the service provided to our customers.”
How Applied Nanotechnology Works
The solution uses invisible microparticles containing a unique identification, functioning as a traceable “DNA” for the company. Applied to cables and equipment in the distribution network, these particles allow the company to prove the origin and ownership of the material through specific reading equipment, hindering the resale of stolen goods and facilitating police action in cases of seizure.
Significant Results and Expansion
Since the implementation began in Rio Grande do Sul, over 3 kilometers of cables and substation grounding systems have been protected. The strategy generated robust numbers: 38 joint operations were carried out, resulting in 43 seizures and the apprehension of approximately 1,480 kilograms of stolen material. Furthermore, the company reported a 55% decrease in theft incidents in the region compared to the previous year.
The success of this initiative paves the way for national expansion. The technology is currently being rolled out in Maranhão, with the goal of reaching all of Grupo Equatorial‘s distributors by 2028. The next strategic step involves applying the particles in logistics centers even before assets are installed in the field, creating a continuous layer of protection.
The adoption of these technologies not only mitigates losses but also reaffirms the sector’s commitment to maintaining the resilience of electrical infrastructure, ensuring a more reliable and secure service for Brazilian society.
