French energy giant TotalEnergies is reinforcing its commitment to the Brazilian market by integrating data center projects into Casa dos Ventos operations, expanding renewable energy infrastructure in the country’s Southern region.
TotalEnergies‘ expansion strategy in the clean energy sector is gaining clearer shape with the advancement of new data center projects in Southern Brazil. The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, during his participation at the ROG.e fair on Monday (21).
This move reflects the multinational’s ambition to solidify its position as a key player in supplying energy for the growing data processing market.
Since 2022, TotalEnergies has been a strategic partner of Casa dos Ventos and is currently negotiating to increase its stake in the Brazilian company from 34% to 49%.
The expansion initiative extends beyond the states of São Paulo and Ceará, where the company already had mapped plans, now targeting the potential of Rio Grande do Sul, which recently received authorization to acquire 500 MW in wind power capacity.
Leap in Renewable Capacity
The growth of Casa dos Ventos‘ portfolio under the partnership with the French group is significant. According to Pouyanné, operational capacity has jumped from 1.5 GW in 2022 to a projected 7.5 GW by the end of this year.
The executive highlighted that the market landscape has radically changed: whereas previously the challenge was finding buyers for the energy produced, today the demand for renewable sources to power technology centers is insatiable.
“Two years ago, we were struggling to find offtakers, to grow, because we have a huge portfolio. Now, last year, we managed to sign more than 1 GW of data centers, and we will attract more.”
Logistical and Strategic Challenges
Despite the optimism, the sector still faces technical hurdles. For TotalEnergies‘ management, the energy connection between the Northeast and South regions is the main bottleneck hindering the advancement of data centers.
The investment in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, therefore, aims to mitigate these logistical risks and ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with the demand for artificial intelligence and processing power.
Globally, the company plans to increase its renewable energy generation from 60 TWh to over 100 TWh by 2030. Alongside Carlos Pascual of S&P Global Energy, the discussion at ROG.e reaffirmed that Brazil possesses unique competitive advantages.
The combination of abundant clean energy sources, natural gas support for grid stabilization, and qualified human capital positions the country prominently in the global race for sustainable digital infrastructure.
