ABB and Ferrari are joining forces to advance clean energy at sea with the Hypersail project, a revolutionary energy-self-sufficient sailboat. The collaboration promises significant breakthroughs in marine electrification and sustainability technologies.
Electrification and automation technology giant ABB has announced an innovative partnership with renowned Italian automaker Ferrari to develop the Hypersail, a prototype racing sailboat designed to be entirely energy-self-sufficient. This collaboration marks a bold step towards a more sustainable future in the maritime sector, combining Ferrari‘s cutting-edge automotive expertise with ABB‘s clean energy and electrification solutions.
The core of this union is the pursuit of complete energy autonomy. The 100-foot Hypersail will be equipped with a state-of-the-art energy management system designed by ABB. This system aims to optimize every watt of energy generated to ensure the efficient operation of all onboard systems, from propulsion and navigation controls to safety devices, proving that high performance and sustainability can go hand-in-hand.
A Monohull Sailboat with Cutting-Edge Technology
The Hypersail prototype, a 100-foot (approximately 30 meters) monohull sailboat, was designed at Ferrari‘s facilities in Maranello, Italy. Remarkably, 90% of its components were produced in-house, highlighting the automaker’s commitment to the project. Currently in the final construction phase in Pisa, the sailboat will undergo rigorous testing before its expected maritime debut by the end of the year.
The electrical architecture of the Hypersail was conceived as a self-sufficient microgrid, operating at both 48 V and 800 VDC. Energy generation comes from an intelligent combination of solar panels and wind turbines installed on deck, with excess energy stored in high-capacity batteries. This setup aims to ensure prolonged autonomy, allowing the vessel to sail for weeks on end, even in challenging oceanic conditions.
The Hypersail runs entirely on renewable energy. The vessel needs to be self-sufficient for weeks on end in Earth’s harshest ocean environments.
This statement from Enrico Voltolini, an engineer at Ferrari and project leader, underscores the ambition and challenges inherent in the initiative. The ability to operate independently and sustainably in extreme scenarios is a testament to the technological advancement pursued by both companies.
ABB: Pushing the Boundaries of Marine Electrification
For ABB, the Hypersail project represents a unique opportunity to test and refine its electrification solutions in one of the planet’s most demanding environments. The marine environment poses unique challenges, where electrical equipment must withstand extreme temperature variations, high humidity, corrosive salinity, pressure, and constant motion. Success with the Hypersail will validate the robustness and efficiency of ABB‘s technologies for marine applications.
Giampiero Frisio, president of ABB‘s Electrification business area, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership:
“The Ferrari Hypersail offers ABB a unique platform to demonstrate how we are collaborating with partners to push the boundaries of DC technology.”
He added that the knowledge gained from this project could be crucial for developing more resilient and efficient energy systems for a wide range of sectors. This includes not only the maritime and renewable energy markets but also data centers and industrial microgrids, demonstrating the broad impact of innovations driven by sustainability.
Ferrari and the Nautical World: A History of Innovation
While the Hypersail marks Ferrari‘s first official foray into competitive offshore sailing, the brand’s connection to the nautical universe is not new. In the 1950s and 1990s, Ferrari was involved in the development of vessels such as the hydroplane Ferrari Arno XI and the Riva Ferrari 32 speedboats, both focused on speed and performance.
Currently, Ferrari‘s core business remains the production of luxury automobiles. However, the brand has expanded its revenue streams through licensing, financial services, sponsorships, and sports activities, demonstrating a diversified strategy consistently focused on excellence and innovation. Participation in the Hypersail project reinforces this spirit, adapting its performance heritage for a clean energy-powered future.
