Tragedy in Água Limpa: Broken Power Line Leads to 61 Cattle Deaths Amid Storm.
An extreme weather event in Água Limpa, in southern Goiás, resulted in the death of 61 head of cattle after an electrical power line broke during heavy rain last Tuesday (15). The herd, valued at up to R$ 200,000, was in an enclosure with over 200 animals, awaiting an auction.
The incident shocked the rural community and raises questions about the safety of electrical infrastructure under adverse weather conditions. The farmer, owner of the animals, also suffered an electric shock while trying to rescue the cattle, compounding the loss and shock.
Cattle Perish After High-Tension Wire Falls on Pasture
The fatality occurred when an electrical cable, possibly affected by the heavy rains and winds, snapped and fell onto a fence near the enclosure where the cattle were gathered. The electricity spread rapidly through the structure, hitting the animals that approached the fence.
The farmer, upon realizing the imminent danger, attempted to intervene but was also struck by the electric discharge. Fortunately, the power was cut off, preventing an even more tragic outcome for the farmer.
The financial impact is significant, with estimated losses reaching R$ 200,000, and the farmer has already obtained a technical report to document the incident.
Equatorial Utility Investigates Causes and Offers Support
Equatorial Energia, the utility company responsible for power distribution in the region, deeply regretted the incident. In a statement, the company informed that power supply had already been restored in the area and that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of the wire rupture.
Equatorial Goiás regrets the situation reported by the rural producer in Água Limpa and informs that the power supply has already been restored. Power was normalized at 00:16 AM on Wednesday (16) after the fault was repaired. The company clarifies that the circumstances of the occurrence are being investigated and that any conclusion about its causes and potential consequences depends on the completion of the technical analysis. Therefore, at this time, it is not possible to establish a link between the reported events and the occurrence.
The company also confirmed it is in contact with the rural producer to offer necessary support and guidance on the procedures for formalizing the occurrence and submitting relevant documentation.
Any compensation request will be evaluated by Equatorial after the completion of the technical investigation, following regulatory and legal criteria.
Context of Intense Rains and Alert for the Electrical Grid
Equatorial emphasized that the region of Água Limpa and southern Goiás were severely affected by heavy rains and wind gusts, weather conditions that had already been the subject of preventive alerts by the company. These extreme weather events caused damage at various points in the electrical grid, requiring continuous work from teams for repairs and safe service restoration.
This tragic event reinforces the importance of preventive maintenance of electrical infrastructure, especially in areas prone to extreme weather conditions. The investigation into the causes and potential responsibility of the utility will be crucial for corrective measures to be implemented, aiming to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future, protecting both property and life in the countryside.
The clean and sustainable energy sector, although focused on renewable sources, also relies on a robust and safe distribution infrastructure.
