Brazil’s energy and mining sectors are preparing for a highly significant event. Between October 20 and 22, CREA RJ will host a workshop dedicated to the management of naturally occurring radioactive materials, known as NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material).
This gathering will bring together a wide range of experts, including representatives from government, industry, academia, and international organizations, to discuss best practices and challenges associated with the presence of NORM in activities such as oil, natural gas exploration, and mining.
Jointly organized by the National Nuclear Safety Authority (ANSN) and the Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (ABDAN), the Workshop on NORM in the Oil & Gas and Mining Sectors centers on the pursuit of innovative and safe solutions.
The event will focus on crucial topics such as regulatory challenges, the enhancement of radiological protection, the complexities of environmental licensing, and, notably, the development of strategies for the safe reuse of these materials, aligning economic growth with sustainability.
Understanding NORM and Its Impacts
The term NORM refers to radioactive materials that occur naturally in the Earth’s crust and can become concentrated through industrial processes. In intensive activities like those in the oil and gas sector and mining, these materials can accumulate during operations.
The management of waste containing NORM requires rigorous monitoring, effective control, and proper disposal to ensure the protection of workers involved, the general public, and consequently, the environment. The workshop aims to train and discuss these best practices for clean and sustainable energy.
Topics Covered and Sectoral Experiences
The event’s agenda is comprehensive and has been carefully crafted to cover the most relevant aspects of NORM management. Among the highlighted topics, specific regulatory requirements for handling these materials will be discussed.
