JR East has begun testing autonomous robots at Shinjuku station. The technology aims to optimize waste collection and ease the operational burden on local staff.

The daily flow of 2.7 million passengers at Shinjuku station in Tokyo creates constant logistical challenges, especially regarding maintenance and cleanliness. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the busiest railway terminal in the world, the infrastructure is now turning to cutting-edge technology to streamline daily operations and improve efficiency for its employees.

JR East, the operator responsible for the site, has launched an innovative pilot project: the introduction of trash-collecting robots. The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce the physical strain on the cleaning team, who must manage a massive amount of debris in one of the most frantic environments in the Japanese capital.

During this experimental phase, three robotic bins are navigating the station’s complex underground corridors.
