Goiás Innovates with AI to Combat Wildfires More Quickly
The Government of Goiás has taken a significant step in environmental protection with the launch of the Integrated Monitoring and Alert System of Goiás (Sima-GO). This new platform, powered by artificial intelligence, promises to revolutionize how the state tackles wildfires, ensuring a faster and more effective response.
The tool is capable of integrating crucial data from various sources, such as meteorological, environmental, and operational information. By jointly and intelligently analyzing this data, Sima-GO enhances the ability to identify areas of imminent risk, monitor the progression of flames, and guide strategic decisions for more assertive firefighting, especially during times of extreme climate events.
Integration and Agility: The Pillars of Sima-GO
Governor Daniel Vilela emphasized the importance of unifying information and agencies to optimize response times.
Its function is to integrate not only state agencies but also information: meteorological, environmental, and operational data. This allows us to have the fastest possible response, which is decisive in controlling burnings.
This integrated approach is fundamental to mitigating the damage caused by burnings, a constant challenge for the region.
Sima-GO is not an isolated initiative. It complements other important investments in firefighting infrastructure, such as the creation of 17 new posts for the Fire Department and Civil Defense, with the goal of reaching 22 units by the end of the year. Additionally, hiring firefighters in traditional communities, especially in historically most affected areas in northeastern Goiás, strengthens the front line, combining technical knowledge with local wisdom for the protection of the Cerrado biome.
Tangible Results: Significant Drop in Burnings
The platform’s launch occurs at a promising moment for Goiás. Recent data indicates an impressive 53.67% reduction in burned area between January and mid-September, compared to the same period last year. This significant result is a product of a set of actions focused on prevention, reinforcing operations, and now, the intelligence provided by Sima-GO.
The Secretary of Environment and Sustainable Development, Andrea Vulcanis, highlighted AI’s capability to accelerate data interpretation.
The platform provides us with the information we need for firefighting, and the result will be agility. We have teams in the field, all prepared, and AI interprets the data and delivers it already interpreted with a speed that humans cannot match.
This rapid processing capability is a crucial differentiator in controlling wildfires.
The Commander-General of the Fire Department, Washington Luiz Vaz Júnior, corroborated the importance of expanding infrastructure and the new technology, mentioning the mobile and fixed posts deployed in northeastern Goiás, an area facing additional challenges due to the influence of fires from neighboring states. The Head of the Monitoring and Alert Section of Civil Defense, Jonathan Alves Soares, added that the time for collecting and analyzing information, which previously took hours, is now reduced to minutes, allowing for a much more agile and focused response.
The implementation of Sima-GO represents a milestone in the use of technology for sustainability and environmental safety in Goiás. With data integration and the power of artificial intelligence, the state positions itself at the forefront of firefighting, demonstrating a clear commitment to preserving its ecosystems and the safety of its population.
