New leadership at Cemig: Experienced executives take the helm to guide the company through a period of transformation.
The Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig) announced a major restructuring of its top management this week. Following a decision by the Board of Directors, Marco Aurélio Vasconcelos has been elected as the company’s Chief Executive Officer, while Alexandre Ramos Peixoto has been appointed as Chairman of the Board.
This leadership renewal at the Minas Gerais-based power giant comes at a critical juncture marked by significant challenges in the electricity sector, including the need to adapt to new regulations, strategic business expansion, and efficient asset management. The selection of the new leaders reflects a commitment to professionals with deep backgrounds in government, regulatory affairs, and the energy industry itself.
Marco Aurélio Vasconcelos takes executive lead
With a law degree from PUC Minas and specializations in Corporate Law and Business Management, Marco Aurélio Vasconcelos brings extensive experience accumulated in sectors such as sanitation, mining, and manufacturing, as well as a prominent track record in the public administration of the state of Minas Gerais.
His professional history includes significant roles at Copasa MG, where he served as General Counsel and Advisor to the Presidency. Since 2022, he had been leading the legal deputy directorate at Copasa, focusing on corporate governance, compliance, sector regulation, and the development of new business opportunities. His legal and management expertise in regulated environments will be vital for leading Cemig, which operates across the entire energy value chain.
Alexandre Ramos Peixoto leads the Board of Directors
Alexandre Ramos Peixoto, an engineer with an established career within Cemig and a history of service in several key Brazilian electricity sector institutions, assumes the position of Chairman of the Board.
Peixoto holds academic qualifications including a postgraduate degree in Quality Engineering and Management from PUC Minas, a specialization in Strategic Management and Planning from UFMG, and an MBA focused on the electricity sector. His professional career has led him to work in prominent bodies such as the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), and the Energy Research Office (EPE). He previously served as President of Cemig and as Director of Regulation and Institutional Relations. Since 2023, Peixoto has also chaired the Board of Directors of the Electric Energy Commercialization Chamber (CCEE).
Strengthening governance with regulatory expertise
The new leadership structure at Cemig consolidates a management team with complementary profiles. Vasconcelos arrives to lead executive operations with a strong legal background and experience in regulated industries, while Peixoto brings to the Board an in-depth vision of the company’s operations and the institutional dynamics of the national electricity sector.
This new management team is expected to be well-positioned to navigate Cemig’s strategic challenges, including regulatory complexity, investment allocation, business expansion, and the strengthening of institutional relations.
