Light exits judicial reorganization after three years, paving the way for new management and access to capital markets.
A major milestone has been reached by Light in the energy sector. Following a three-year period under judicial reorganization, the Rio de Janeiro courts have officially decreed the end of the process.
The ruling, issued by the 3rd Business Court of the Capital District, indicates that the distribution utility and its holding company have met the essential targets established in their restructuring plan.
With the successful conclusion of the reorganization, Light now resumes operations under ordinary management. This financial outcome represents a significant turnaround, allowing the company to regain access to capital markets.
This step is critical for the company’s financial health and future plans. The judicial decision comes at a strategic moment, especially considering the ongoing discussions regarding the renewal of its energy distribution concession in Rio de Janeiro.
Successful restructuring and future outlook
The judicial analysis for closing the case considered several factors. Key among them were the settlement and transfer of funds to creditors with smaller balances, the issuance of new debt instruments, and the delivery of renegotiated debentures.
Additionally, Light received a direct cash injection of R$ 300 million into its operating accounts, which was fundamental for the continuity of its activities.
The judge presiding over the case, Leonardo de Castro Gomes, emphasized that the existence of long-term obligations should not be an impediment to ending the reorganization.
He argued that maintaining the process for longer could generate additional costs and compromise the company’s ability to re-establish its credit in the market.
The end of the judicial reorganization coincides with preparations for a new concession cycle for Light in Rio de Janeiro. In line with this perspective, the company has already approved a private capital increase, which may range between R$ 1 billion and R$ 1.5 billion, through the issuance of new shares.
This financial move aims to ensure the necessary investments to upgrade the grid, with a focus on reducing non-technical losses and continuously improving service quality indicators. Light is now preparing for a new phase, where its financial stability and the effective execution of its investments will be decisive for the future of its concession.
