Ibama has given its approval for Petrobras to expand its exploratory drilling in the Amazon River Mouth basin, aiming to assess the commercial potential of new oil reserves in the region.
Oil exploration along Brazil’s equatorial margin has entered a new phase. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) has authorized the drilling of three additional exploratory wells in strategic areas within the Amazon River Mouth basin, off the coast of Amapá.
This authorization marks a decisive step for the state-owned oil company, which aims to understand the true scope of the discovery announced last August. Operations will concentrate on block FZA-M-59, where the primary goal is to confirm whether the identified reservoirs are economically viable for potential large-scale operation.
The Exploration Strategy
The field activities authorized by the environmental agency include wells named Manga, PAD Morpho, and Crotalus. Petrobras confirmed that the operational schedule will first prioritize the completion of drilling at the Morpho well, before proceeding to the other locations specified in the license.
Regarding the next steps of the operation, the state-owned company reiterated its commitment to technical continuity:
“The company will proceed with its exploration plan in the block, focusing on the completion of Morpho and the immediate progression to drilling in Manga, Crotalus, and the extension of the Morpho well itself.”
Environmental Requirements and Next Steps
The granted license has an initial validity of 120 days, with the possibility of extension depending on the progress of the operations. However, Ibama‘s approval is not unconditional: Petrobras must adhere to a rigorous environmental management plan.
The requirements include constant monitoring of local fauna, strict pollution control protocols, and specific safeguards for the protection of marine animals within the impact zone. Compliance with these measures is essential to ensure the sustainability of operations as the company evaluates the energy future of the block.
