The Committee on Economic Affairs of the Senate has authorized an investment of R$ 343 million to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure in strategic regions of Brazil.

Brazil’s energy transition has just received a new boost with the approval of an international credit operation by the CAE (Committee on Economic Affairs) of the Federal Senate. The amount, totaling $67 million – approximately R$ 343.6 million – will be directed towards fostering sustainable projects in the Northeast, as well as in the states of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo.

The initiative aims not only to expand clean energy generation capacity but also to promote the necessary modernization of the electricity distribution and transmission systems in these regions. Under the rapporteurship of Senator Camilo Santana (PT-CE), the project now proceeds with urgency for a vote in the Senate’s plenary.

Financing Structure and Strategic Partnerships

The operation will be managed by the Northeast Bank (BNB), with the guarantee of the Union. The capital will be raised from two global benchmark institutions: the IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) and the CIF (Climate Investment Funds).

Each of these bodies will be responsible for contributing half of the total investment value, totaling R$ 171.80 million for each funding source.

The approval is a fundamental step to consolidate energy infrastructure, ensuring greater resilience in distribution systems and boosting the renewable matrix in the covered areas.

Payment Conditions and Execution Schedule

The financing plan presents favorable conditions for the sector, offering an eight-year grace period and a total term of 20 years for debt amortization. Installments will be paid semiannually, and the Northeast Bank is exempt from direct financial counterparties in this contract.

The disbursement of funds is planned to be gradual, extending over a four-year cycle. According to the official schedule, disbursements will begin in 2026 with R$ 34.36 million and will follow a growth trajectory until 2030, when the final transfer of R$ 68.72 million is scheduled to be completed.

With these contributions, a significant acceleration in the modernization of the electricity sector and the implementation of new sustainability technologies is expected.
